USEFUL TRAVELING INFORMATION
Rijeka is a complex post-industrial town, fiercely contested throughout history due to its strategic position. With only around 130.000 inhabitants, it is a small city on a European level, yet third largest in Croatia. As it is the largest port in the country, its economy mainly relies on shipbuilding and maritime transport. Located in the Kvarner Bay of the Adriatic Sea, it is the main city of the Primorje Gorski Kotar County and its economical, administrative and cultural centre. Rijeka was awarded the prestigious title of the European Capital of Culture 2020 for its programme “The Port of Diversity”.
ACCOMMODATION IN RIJEKA
As in 2020 Rijeka is the European Capital of Culture, a lot of programmes will be going on in Rijeka in September 2020, therefor we strongly recommend you to book the accommodation in Rijeka as soon as possible. ACCOMMODATION NEAR RIJEKA
You can also check hotels and private accommodation in Opatija. There is 12 km between Opatija and Rijeka, and a bus ride takes about 20 minutes. Bus line 32 operates daily on this route (every 30 minutes) according to this timetable.
GETTING TO RIJEKA
There are several airports in the Rijeka area (up to 2 hours and 30 minutes distance): Krk Island, Pula, Trieste, Venice and Zagreb.
How to get from the airports to Rijeka
- Zagreb (Croatia), Franjo Tuđman Airport
Direct bus from the Zagreb Airport to Rijeka (Bus Terminal – Žabica) – a single departure every day at 3:30 pm. Price: 150 HRK = 21 EUR (one way) and 250 HRK = 34 EUR (return). On the way back, the bus leaves in the morning at 5 am from Jelačić Square in Rijeka to Franjo Tuđman Airport.
Shuttle bus to the Zagreb bus station (approx. 40 min) and then take a bus to Rijeka (approx. 2 hours 40 minutes). The shuttle bus from the airport leaves every 30 minutes from 4 am until 11 pm and costs 30 HRK for a single fare or 40 HRK for a return ticket. Please find the detailed timetable here.

- Krk (Croatia), Rijeka International Airport
There is a shuttle bus service to Rijeka. Price: 50 HRK = 7 EUR (one way) (bus station at Jelačić trg 3). You can find monthly driving schedule here: http://rijeka-airport.hr/en/bus
You can also take a taxi from the Rijeka International Airport, Krk to the city which costs around 35 EUR.
- Pula (Croatia), Pula International Airport
There is no direct shuttle bus service from the Pula Airport to Rijeka. You must take a taxi to the Pula bus station and then take a bus to Rijeka. You may also take the airport shuttle that runs every 90 minutes and stops in Pula’s main bus station. The ticket costs 30 HRK. The journey to Rijeka takes approximately 2,5 hours. You can pre-book a ticket here or buy it on the spot.
You can also take a taxi straight to Rijeka which costs around 80 EUR.
- Trieste (Italy), Trieste Airport
Flixbus offers a direct shuttle bus service from the Trieste Airport to Rijeka. Note that there is only one shuttle per day in both directions. The shuttle leaves daily from the Trieste Airport at 5:50 pm and arrives in Rijeka at 8:30 pm. From Rijeka to the Trieste Airport, the shuttle leaves at 07:45 am and arrives at 10:20 am. - Venice (Italy), Venice Airport
Flixbus offers a direct shuttle bus service from the Venice Airport to Rijeka. You can book your ticket online here: https://global.flixbus.com/. This route is not available everyday, so make sure you check if there is a bus running on the day of your arrival.
- Ljubljana (Slovenia), Ljubljana Airport Brnik
You can get from Ljubljana Airport by train and bus but it will take around 5 hours. The fastest way is to go by car (1 hour and 40 minutes). You can also check private transfer option (GoOpti) which would cost you from 200 to 400 HRK.
